Country overview
The Heart of the Inca Empire

Peru was the centre of the Inca Empire โ€” the largest empire in pre-Columbian America โ€” and the legacy of that civilisation is visible everywhere, from the astronomical precision of Machu Picchu to the agricultural terraces still in use in the Sacred Valley after 600 years. But Peru is far more than Machu Picchu: it is also the Amazon basin, Lake Titicaca at 3,800 metres, and a food culture that rivals any in the world.

Our tours spend significant time in Cusco and the Sacred Valley before the Machu Picchu visit โ€” giving you the context and altitude acclimatisation to fully appreciate what you are seeing. Maximum 16 guests means we can take the Inca Trail if you want it, or the train if you prefer.

Machu Picchu at Sunrise
The Lost City of the Incas โ€” visited at dawn before the crowds, with a guide who brings the archaeology alive as living history.
Sacred Valley
Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Moray โ€” the agricultural heartland of the Inca Empire, still farmed by Quechua communities today.
Cusco
The navel of the Inca world โ€” Spanish baroque churches built on Inca foundations, and the finest Peruvian cuisine in the country.
Peruvian Food
Lima is one of the world's great food cities โ€” ceviche, causa, lomo saltado, and the world's best pisco sours. Every Oncor Peru tour includes a food-focused day in Lima.

"The Sacred Valley was completely unexpected. I knew about Machu Picchu but the living Quechua communities, the salt pans of Maras, the circular terraces of Moray โ€” extraordinary."

"Waking up in the Amazon lodge at 5am to a jungle dawn chorus, then spotting a giant river otter from the canoe. Then Machu Picchu three days later. Peru is astonishing."

Frequently asked
Peru Travel Questions
How do I deal with altitude sickness in Cusco?
Cusco sits at 3,400m โ€” altitude acclimatisation is real and important. We build rest time into the first day in Cusco, recommend arriving early, and advise on medication options. Most guests acclimatise within 24 hours.
Is the Inca Trail included?
The 4-day Inca Trail is available as an optional upgrade on our Land of the Incas tour. It requires advance booking (permits sell out months ahead) and a moderate to challenging fitness level.
What is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?
May to October is the dry season and the best time. We avoid December to April when the rains make the Inca Trail slippery and visibility at Machu Picchu is often poor.
Can I combine Peru with other South American destinations?
Yes โ€” Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador are popular extensions. Ask your advisor.
